2012 short summary of three terms

RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL
Having thought of children who walked to school for more than five miles to school. Rugando Parents School was Founded and established in 2012 by Matsiko David a teacher by profession. The school motto is “we are able”. We thought of creating a difference to so many schools, which are struggling financially by providing breakfast, and lunch to the children. Neighboring schools have a different setup. By providing cooked lunch the poor children are able to cope with their studies in our School. There are many orphan children and child headed families in Rugando. This makes education a dream for many children not a reality. One needs a comprehensive approach to education if children are to remain in school.

ENROLLEMENT SINCE THE SCHOOL.
2012, we started with enrolling 47 children. As we were a new school, we had to prove the quality of the education process and the results achieved. Engaging teachers was a difficult process. However, we managed the first year to our satisfaction. We manage a number of orphans as part of our educational program. We have been successful to give orphans a similar education as the school fee paying children.

SCHOOL STRUCTURES
We started with two classrooms and one office. All these were in one block. Both classes (had no concrete flooring) apart from the office. (With the limited cash flow, we started to buy cement bags and gravel when we received donation from visitors to the school. By the end of the second term, we were able to add concrete on the first class room.
Our challenge is managing the development of the school, as we have some funds from contributors and donation. We have often kind parents who help in “labor” to complete the concrete flooring of the class flooring.

We believe in a sustainable solution when funds are available. We hope to create an environment where the children are trained equally with our best efforts. We are looking forward to 2013 and hopefully increase the number of school fee paying children to accomplish our goal. Education is key for progress.

2013 short summary of three terms

RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL
This year, started out better than expected. Our enrollment increased to 87 children. This was a significant increase. As in 2012, we were able to add two more classrooms. Again, with very basic needs. A foundation with walls. We were able to add another teacher.
We are slowly growing but every term is a challenge to meet the planned budget.

One critical area was the inflation in the country, where, lunch promised for the children was maintained but the budget was not balanced. The teacher’s salaries were delayed for 4 weeks. We gathered the children parents and explained the problem and the school fees and having a balanced budget. After a long discussion, the school and the parents, agreed to increase the fees, a little so the children may continue to have their lunch. 2013 was a tough milestone to pass. We were supported by an NGO with class desk and chairs. We are very thankful for the donation. We were also given school material from the NGO.

2014 short summary of three terms

RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL
2014 was a turning point for Rugando Parents School, Our enrollment increased to 147 children. The Board Members were very pleased and excited of the enrollment. We believed, our concept of giving good education and lunch for the children, gave their parent, confidence in our approach of healthy students. This year, another class was added and two other classrooms were built. Brick by brick during the three terms, we were able to complete the building but no concrete flooring. As the parents were supporting RPS approach to education and the results, the school was delivering, compared to some neighboring school, the priority, was education for the children. The dirt floor, will be attended to, when, funding is available.

In 2014, the school was selected to participate in the Bwindi Impenetrable Kids League. This is where children participate in both sport and soccer. It was started by Guy Hodgkinson from UK together with Conservation Through Public Health. Our children enjoyed it since it was the first of its kind for Bwindi girls to play football and they excelled in this. The whole community started looking at Rugando Parents School.

2015 short summary of three terms

RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL
The number of children enrolled was 167 and the feedback from their parents was satisfying. Our investment of teachers and the right support to the students and orphan gave us strength to pursue the challenge.
Another class was added according to our plan for 2015. This year too, we had support from passing foreign tourist and a NGO that recognize our struggles. We appreciate all kind of support.

In this newsletter, we would like to mention to your readers that, we lack basic school teaching material. In most cases, one text book is shared by three students. Library books are very scarce because, there is no financial support from the Government or local municipality.

Our Board members, worked on a plan to introduce targeted projects what, visitors and newsletter readers and NGOs recognize areas we need help and where the funds will be used. This makes the progress clearer to the audiences and local authorities.

The address to send school material are:

2016 SHORT SUMMARY OF THREE TERMS
In this newsletter, we would like to mention to you reading this again, we lack basic school teaching materials. In most cases, one text book is shared by three students. Library books are very scarce because, there is no financial support from the Government or local municipality.

There are slight improvements in enrollment for 2016. The number is 180 children. This increase in children, had forces us to add another classroom and an office.

Another teacher was employed for managing the schools day to day lessons.

A clear decision was made to improve the children nutritionist. This is easily said than done. Changing habits are difficult but, step by step we plan to introduce School of Hygiene nutritionists which is a return to a more traditional  and much healthier Uganda diet of brown rice, legumes, whole grain barley or millet, fruits, fresh greens like mustard greens, sweet potato leaves and butternut leaves. ENCOURAGE SCHOOL COOKS TO PREPARE HEALTH LUNCH WITHIN THE SCHOOL BUDGET IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE. We are trying to introduce a local fruit, once a week. Also learning about the fruit.

2017 short summary of three terms

RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL
We did well for 2017 enrollment where, 208 children registered. Which also required, employing another teacher. For quality education, one needs good teachers with passion. To keep high level results, for the students, the employed teachers must preform.

The final class for primary seven was added in 2017. This gives the total of nine classrooms and two offices. The reason we have nine class rooms, is that we have two preschool classes for working parents. This allows mothers to work at home in the local market, with their own harvest to increase their earning power. Which we are very proud of.

Of all these structures, four class rooms shave concrete floors and other five do not have.

Other school development.

The school was selected to participate in the reading of books at Buhoma Community Primary school by omushana.org.  In this, children have gained reading culture and increased their vocabulary.
Our school has now been fully licensed by the ministry of education and sports of Uganda.

Introduction of health food during lunch have contributed to improvements in class attention and results at end of term. We have given positive feedback to the cooks.  They will continue improving the lunch during to 2018. We are very concern about inflation as food prices goes up.

The children are not very tired in the afternoon, since adding carefully thought lunch by added locally produced nutritional vegetables.

2019 SHORT SUMMARY OF THREE TERMS
RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL
In 2019, we had the third set of children complete primary seven to join other schools. Here, we had 9 candidates and all of them passed well. They were able to continue with their education by joining secondary schools. We used to follow them up before covid came in by visiting the schools where they went and encouraging them on many things. We could counsel them and give them the necessary knowledge t be able to compete with the rest and excel.

2020 SHORT SUMMARY OF THREE TERMS
RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL

In 2020, all children reported to school. They studied for close to 2 months up to March 2020 when all schools were closed because of covid. Things started becoming abnormal to the extent that most of the children lacked what to eat at home. The school director David Matsiko reached out to many international friends who sent in money to help buy food and soap. Lack of food affected most of the children especially those who depended on school for survival.

2021 SHORT SUMMARY OF THREE TERMS
RUGANDO PARENTS SCHOOL
In2021, children were allowed in school again but class by class. Those who were completing their primary level (P7) were allowed in first followed by primary six, then five and four. When primary seven completed their primary level, there was the second covid wave that came in that did not favor schools to continue. The school was closed again and children told to go back home and wait for the governments’ announcement.
Some children especially girls who grow rapidly are mostly affected in this. There is a lot of doubt that most of girls especially those in  upper classes will drop out of the school if no more efforts are put on and proper sanitary equipment given out to them. Sanitary pads are one of the essential thing that girls need much which is hard to find here in Uganda. In addition, children need to feed well by balancing their diet when schools resume. This is a big challenge now that most of the parents are financially constrained because of the burden these parents are facing now because of the lockdown.
